First Americans May Have
Been European
- Over the years, there has been various accounts of findings which
indicate the presence of Europeans on the American continent long before the
established, assumed date(s) of their earliest arrival. In a Valparaiso
University Press release, the research of a professor of the institution
„...is lending support to evidence that the first humans to settle the
Americas came from Europe, a discovery that overturns decades of classroom
lessons that nomadic tribes from Asia crossed a Bering Strait land-ice
bridge.“

Remains of 4.000 German Soldiers to be Interred
- On 23 Lenzing 06, we posted a link to a story from Radio Prague
that detailed the discovery of the remains of 4.000 German soldiers (who had
fallen during the Second World War) in a factory in Usti nad Labem. On 27
Wonnemond, Deutsche Welle reported that an agreement was reached
between authorities in both the German and Czech governments for the burial
of the soldiers. A military cemetery will be constructed for their interment
in the Czech town of Cheb (the site is to be located next to the town's
cemetery, proper).

Bavarian Prime Minister Seeks Resolution for Sudeten Germans
-
Guenther Beckstein, the Bavarian Prime Minister calls on the Czech government
in seeking to settle outstanding issues relative to the expulsion of ethnic
Germans from the Czechoslovak state following the conclusion of WW II. Czech
officials seem cold to the discussion, which may hamper the efforts of the
Sudeten Germans.

Viking Artifacts Near Waterford, Ireland to Remain Buried
-
The site was originally discovered in 2003 during the construction of the
Waterford City bypass. Only a portion of it was explored- that exploration
yielded 6.000 artifacts! The route of the bypass was changed in an effort to
help preserve the privately-owned site, and no further exploration of the site
is planned (authorities cite a lack of resources). Efforts are being made for
its preservation.

A Quest to save the prehistoric in the Alps
-
The melting ice in the Alpine region reveals its prehistory as weapons, tools,
and even bodies such as the now infamous „Iceman“, Oetzi become unearthed. One
major problem that has arisen is the removal of objects (either by folk
wishing to report a find, or outright looting) from their original setting- a
taskforce of archaeologists, climbers, mountain rescue, and anthropologists
has been formed in an effort to protect, preserve, and / or salvage newly
uncovered sites.

-
The first excavations within the ring itself are underway at Stonehenge. The
work is funded by the BBC, and is being filmed for a „Timewatch“ program set
to air in the autumn. Researchers will be concentrating on the smaller stones
within- they believe the stones hold the key to the true nature of the site.

Website Update
-
In recent months, we've become aware of a growing interest in our
organization from a „membership“ standpoint... in the past, the
Irminen-Gesellschaft didn't operate as a traditional „membership group“,
choosing instead to remain a small collective of active writers, artisans and
/ or other contributors working for the common interests and education of
Irminen and the greater pan-Germanic Heathen community. So, to serve those
interested Folk, we've added a copy of our basic application (see the „contact
/ membership“ button in the left-hand column) and appropriate dues schedule
(along with PayPal buttons, for those who prefer to utilize that format
instead of a money-order or check).

The First German-American Heritage Center
-
During a recent dinner at Cannstatter V.V., Bern Deichmann -president of the
German-American Heritage Foundation of the U.S.A. announced that plans were on
track for the establishment of the first German-American Heritage Center in
Washington, D.C. later in 2008. The official press release from 31 Hartung 08:
-
-
- First National German-American Heritage Center of the USA to become a
reality in 2008
WASHINGTON, DC (January 31, 2008) - The German-American Heritage Foundation of
the USA (GAHF) has taken positive steps forward to establish the first
national German-American Heritage Center of the USA in downtown Washington,
DC. German-Americans from all around the country through their generous
donations are making the Heritage Center possible; they have raised $1.75
million in contributions and pledges, so far.
The center will be located at Hockemeyer Hall, a spectacular 1888 Victorian
townhouse, known to be one of the most distinctive and historically
significant buildings in its neighborhood. The Agreement of Purchase and Sale
was finally signed in early November. The closing of Hockemeyer Hall by the
GAHF in expected around June 2008.
Having already renovated the exterior of Hockemeyer Hall, the GAHF is looking
forward to bringing this historic building back to life for the community of
Americans of German-speaking ancestry, Germans, Austrians and Swiss, that
helped shape this country. Originally built by John Hockemeyer, a successful
German merchant, Hockemeyer Hall was later expanded to become a businessmen’s
club in 1893. It is therefore fitting that it now becomes the home of the
German-American Heritage Center of the USA.
Permanent exhibits at the Heritage Center will focus on Immigration,
Migration, Jamestown and Germantown to name a few, plus there will be rotating
exhibits from around the country. The achievements of German immigrants and
their influence in politics, business and culture will be presented. Programs
will be developed with leading experts to highlight our rich history.
The total cost for Hockemeyer Hall is approximately $2.1 million. This amount
includes the cost for the building with exterior and interior renovations as
well as closing costs. To cover the difference between the cost and what has
been collected two benefactors have committed to provide repayable loans. This
ensures the purchase of the building. Fundraising efforts will need to
continue to repay the loan, provide furnishings, establish an endowment of
$500,000 to maintain the facility and fund programs and exhibits.
All Americans of German-speaking ancestry are urged to support this project
financially. Contributors of $25,000 or more will have their name engraved on
the Center’s Wall of Honor. All donations of $100 or more will be listed in a
leather-bound book archived at the Center.

Bridge-Construction Threatens Dresden's UNESCO Title
-
UNESCO has issued the statement that if the bridge is completed over the Elbe
river, Dresden's status (as a „World Heritage“ site) would be revoked. The
bridge was intended to help ease traffic into the city. Neither the original
nor alternative designs for the bridge have been accepted by UNESCO. Council
members will meet 13 Lenzing to determine whether or not to proceed with the
construction (as begun in November) or to choose a more suitable alternative
(a tunnel). Demonstrations against the bridge construction are planned for
Saturday, 8 Lenzing.
